A crucible is a small, ceramic vessel in which chemists can heat a substance to extremely high temperatures. However, the dictionary also defines the word as "a severe test or trial," and it is in this latter sense that the late Arthur Miller named his play. Widely regarded as Miller's response to the red-scare witch hunts of the 1950's, The Crucible is much more than that. Yes, the play peers into those shadows that lurk in the human heart, but more importantly, it celebrates the noble battle that men and women forever wage against our own worst selves.
**Suitable for young adults**
